Prep wrestling: Warren, MHS on the mat Saturday

After an eight-day layoff from competition, Warren’s grapplers got back on the mat against the Sheridan Panthers in an OHSAA duos match at New Lexington on Wednesday.

While the Warriors dropped a 56-15 decision, they won’t have any time to dwell on it as they are scheduled to be back in action at The McDonald’s/Miami Trace Wrestling Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.

“This is a pretty competitive tournament,” said Warren head coach Mike Pahl. “There’s 19 teams in the field.”

Bill Heldman-coached Marietta High will also be wrestling on the same day in the Bob Zide Rumble in Williamstown at 10 a.m. The Tiger matmen haven’t faced an opponent since hosting Warren, Belpre and Caldwell in a quad at Marietta Middle School on Jan. 9.

The MHS and Warren squads did not square off in that match at MMS.

Before Wednesday, the Warriors were in a scheduled tri-meet on Jan. 15. They split, beating Nelsonville-York 42-27 and losing to Chillicothe 45-30.

The McDonald’s/Miami Trace Wrestling Invitational, a one-day tournament, is considered one of the top meets in southeast Ohio. It is basically designed to prepare the grapplers for future tournaments, like the league, sectional, district and state.

The field is also expected to include Westfall, Sheridan, Washington Court House, Wilmington, Bethel-Tate, Vinton County, Logan Elm, Greenville, Amanda Clearcreek, Athens, McClain, Gallia Academy, Chillicothe, Wyoming, Goshen, Circleville, and host Miami Trace.

Warren’s nominated seeded wrestlers will be sophomore Levi Congleton (106 pounds, 28-1 record), senior Cory Parsons (113, 24-3), junior Cody Dobbs (145, 15-12), senior Austin Antill (170, 20-4), junior Zach Pike (182, 17-11), junior Chris Massey (220, 11-8), and sophomore Brandon Pahl (285, 26-3).

Congleton is the Warriors’ lone top seed.

Parsons is a second seed.

Warren’s unseeded wrestlers will be Austin Klintworth (152 pounds), Wayne Bailey, Austin Miles (160), and Braden Hewitt (138).

“Overall, I’ve been very pleased with how this team has wrestled,” Mike Pahl said.

At the Bob Zide Rumble in Williamstown, which will be featuring about a 13-school field, Marietta is expected to start Josh Clark (106), Will Cogswell (182), Nick Spurr (195), Garrett Davis (152), Jake Dickson (160), Scott Bricker (138), Malachi Vaughn (120), Troy Smithberger (170), Jon Hedrick (220), David Vann (113) and Anthony Winters (145).

The Yellowjacket grapplers are coached by first-year boss Ryan Scott.

Scott Zimmer-coached Waterford will be competing at New Lexington at 10 a.m. Saturday

The Wildcat wrestling lineup will be featuring Zeb Offenberger (120), Austin Lang (126), Tim Leach (132), Weston Wagner (138), Hunter Munjas (160) and Blake Heiss (182).
