Splashdown: MHS swimmers in district competition Friday

After Marietta High’s sectional swim showing at Ohio University in Athens on Feb. 9, seven girls and four boys will be competing in the Ohio Division II district championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of The Ohio State University at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Walt Teer is very pleased with the numbers.

“We only had two swimmers back from last year at the start of the season,” said the Tigers’ swim coach, “and six of our swimmers had never swam competitively six months ago. Eleven out of 18 of our swimmers will be going to district.

“It just goes to show you that you can come out in this sport, be competitive, and do well. Water is the ultimate equalizer.”

At stake at district is a berth in the 2013 OHSAA Swimming & Diving State Tournaments at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton Feb. 21-23.

“Right now, I think our 200 yard freestyle relay team has the best shot of medaling at district,” Teer said.

Marietta’s 200 freestyle relay team, which includes senior Julie Fobes, junior Amanda Ferguson, freshman Katie Rauch, and freshman Lucia Picciano, captured first place in the sectional tournament in a time of 1:57.62.

At district, Fobes is scheduled to be in the water in three other events – the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, and the 200 yard medley relay. In the latter competition, she will be swimming the backstroke, while sophomore Haley Varnadoe will be doing the breaststroke; Picciano, the butterfly; and Ferguson, the freestyle.

During sectional competition, this Tiger foursome placed runner-up in a clocking of 2:13.36.

Fobes qualified for district in the backstroke with a winning sectional time of 1:10.79. In the 50 freestyle, she was third in 28.44, and Picciano was tied for fourth in 28.58.

Varnadoe was fourth in the 500 yard freestyle in 6:26.18 at sectional to earn a district berth. She will also be a leg on the 400 yard freestyle relay team which includes junior Katie Miller, senior Amelia Gulick, and Rauch.

At the sectional, the MHS 400 relay team was third in 4:44.10.

On the boys’ side, Marietta’s 200 yard freestyle relay team of freshman Jack Halliday, senior Jon Creamans, senior Joe Roberts, and freshman Nate McVicar will be competing at district. At sectional, the foursome placed seventh in 1:50.07.

McVicar is also slated to swim in the 200 yard freestyle. At sectional, he covered the distance in a district qualifying time of 2:06.79, which was good for fourth place.
