Prep girls basketball: Lady Noles eliminated by Union Local

CAMBRIDGE – Senior Kayla Doty tossed in 18 of her game-high 20 points in the second half to lead the Union Local Lady Jets to a 46-34 victory over the Monroe Central Seminoles in a sectional quarterfinal match up at Cambridge High School Tuesday night.

With the two teams tied at 27-27 heading to the final quarter, Doty scored the first eight points of the final period to spark a 15-2 Lady Jet run that spelled doom for the Seminioles.

Both teams came out ice cold from the floor in the opening period as evidenced by the 5-5 score at the end of the first eight minutes.

The Lady Jets got five points from Cori Medley and a field goal by Dallas Montag to jump out to a seven- point second quarter lead but the Lady Noles finished the half on a 13-4 run to take an 18-16 lead into intermission.

Chelsie Tewanger opened the second half with a three-point play to give MC their biggest lead of the night at 21-16.

After Doty and Monroe Central junior Laycie Ball traded scores, Local got an inside score by Doty and a three ball from Medley to even things up at 23-23.

Doty, who finished the third period with eight points, scored the final four for the Lady Jets, but Tewanger answered with a buzzer beater to send the game to the final quarter all knotted up at 27-27.

Medley found Doty wide open under the basket for an easy deuce to open the fourth and after a free throw and another bucket, Doty moved outside and promptly drilled a triple to make it a 35-27 game with 3:50 to play.

Monroe Central connected on just 7-of-34 shots in the second half and failed to score a single bucket until Anne LaFollette’s field goal with less than two minutes to play in the game.

Union Local finished things off at the charity stripe as they hit 12-of-15 free throw attempts to bring the Seminoles season to a close.

“We just didn’t finish there at the end when we needed to and they made the run when they needed to,” said Monroe Central head coach Troy Baker. “I thought we had plenty of good looks, we just couldn’t get them to fall.”

Doty finished with a game high 10 rebounds to go along with her 20 points, while Medley and Montag both reached double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Tewanger led the way for the Seminoles with 16 points while Chelsie Roberts grabbed nine rebounds to go along with four points.

Union Local, now 15-8 on the season will face West Muskingum Saturday afternoon in the sectional final game, while the season comes to an end for the (15-9) Lady Seminoles.

“Give Union Local a lot of credit, their defense was good,” said Baker, whose six seniors played their last game as Seminoles. “Our seniors played hard and they played to win and that’s what makes it hurt even more.”
