Marietta driver critical after tanker rollover

ST. MARYS, W.Va. – A Pleasants County road was bottled up for close to 12 hours Monday night after a tanker truck rolled over, spilling gasoline and diesel fuel.

The W.Va 16 was closed about two miles above St. Marys Monday evening after a tanker truck was involved in a single-vehicle accident, crashing and rolling over. The driver of the truck Michael Wheeler, 61, of Marietta, was trapped inside the cabin. He was freed by emergency crews and transported by helicopter to Charleston Area Medical Center. He was listed in critical condition.

Pleasants County emergency officials said all of its manpower was used in response. St. Marys Volunteer Fire Department and Pleasants County sheriff’s deputies were on scene. Calls to the sheriff’s department were referred to the West Virginia State Police detachment.

The road was open as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, but motorists were told to expect delays as clean-up crews continued work.?
