Alvena E. ‘Daph’ DeVol

Alvena Elizabeth “Daph” DeVol, 99, of Williamstown, and formerly of Marietta, died Friday afternoon (March 15, 2013) at Heartland of Marietta.

Born May 11, 1913, in Stanleyville, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Edward W. and Edith E. Miller Trautner. She was a graduate of Marietta City Schools, and had been manager of The Curtain Shop on Putnam Street and on Front Street. She later had been employed as a teller at Peoples Bank, having retired in 1978. Alvena was a 60-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marietta and the Bethesda Circle. Also a member of the Public Employee’s Retirees System and the Betsey Mills Club; and a former member of the Marietta Country Club and the Senior Citizens. Daph had been a volunteer for Franciscan Meals-on-Wheels.

She loved to travel and to spend time enjoying her flowers in her yard. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her friends and family; especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Larry P. DeVol (Peggy), of Williamstown, a grandson, Jeffrey P. DeVol, Williamstown, and a granddaughter, Kelley Jo DeVol Hockensmith (Shane W.), of Huntersville, N.C.; three great-grandsons, Jonathan and Jackson DeVol and Corbin W. Hockensmith; two great-granddaughters, Jennifer N. Harold (Shaun) and Jamison T. DeVol; brother-in-law, Dale Hendershot, of Marietta; several nieces and nephews, including John Trautner (Jane) and Janet Spindler; along with special friends, Marie Work, Rosemary Brammer, Norma DeBona; and granddaughter-in-law, Summer E. DeVol.

Alvena was preceded in death by her husband, George Parker “Judd” DeVol, whom she married March 17, 1936; and by four sisters, Margaret Spindler, Mildred Tullius, Ruby Lowe and Betty Hendershot; and by two brothers, Merlin Trautner and Walter “Dick” Trautner.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday (March 19, 2013) at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home with the Rev. David R. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
