Be vigilant to keep kids safe through the summer

The sound of children yelling and playing is starting to fill the air as the school year comes to an end.

It is a good time to remember some summer safety tips, for parents, children and drivers.

Everyone thinks of driving safely at the beginning of the school year, but it is just as important, if not more so, at the end of the school year.

Children will be running back and forth along streets. Balls will be hit into the street. Children will ride bikes out between parked cars. It all is an obstacle course for the motorist driving through residential areas.

Drivers are reminded to keep their speed down and be on a constant watch for children playing.

They won’t think twice about darting into the street.

Neighborhoods aren’t the only place to watch out for children. Parks and playgrounds will be filled during the summer months. Even the ringing of the ice cream truck will bring youngsters running.

A safe summer for children also is the responsibility of parents. Give children a reminder lecture about not playing in the street or running into traffic. Children should only cross the street at corners or crosswalks.

Bicycle safety also is important. Children must have proper fitting helmets. A severe head injury can result without the use of a good bike helmet. Make sure the bike is in good working order, with properly inflated tires and brakes that work.

Parents also need to talk to their children about where they should ride bikes. In residential areas, riders need to be aware of pedestrians on sidewalks. Bikes should never be ridden on the street.

Swimming pool safety also needs to be remembered. Never leave a child or children alone in or around a pool. Tragedy could strike in a matter of a minute.

Keep a close eye on children when heading out of the city to a country park with a lake.

Children can get into trouble if they don’t have proper activities to keep them busy. That can be tough with the busy schedule of parents today.

Parents should make plans to take advantage of summer activities available, and take trips to local zoos or other educational places, such as museums.

Summer is a fun time for children. But a broken arm or leg can ruin the season’s fun.

Watch children carefully during the summer break.
