Would-be robber foiled at local store

The Marietta Police Department is investigating an attempted robbery that took place at K-Mart Sunday night.

According to Capt. Jeff Waite, a male suspect walked into the K-Mart, at 502 Pike St., and handed a note to a female store employee shortly before 8 p.m.

The note advised that the man was robbing the store, was carrying a gun, and directed the employee to take him to the safe.

“She told him she couldn’t get into the safe and they walked to the front of the store together and he walked right out the front door,” said Waite.

No employees saw the gun, he added.

A nearby officer was able to quickly respond. The man, who is described as a 6-foot-2 black male, 160-170 pounds, in his mid-20s, with no facial hair, was not familiar to store employees. Customers at nearby businesses did not report seeing him or anything suspicious following the incident, said Waite.

K-Mart does collect security footage and the department may be able to soon release a video still of the suspect for identification.
