Backpack, school supplies available
Washington-Morgan Community Action will be taking applications for backpacks and school supplies for children attending kindergarten to eighth grade. Applicants may apply during the week of July 15 at the agency office located at 218 Putnam St., Marietta, from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Families must be at or under 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines to qualify.
Applicants must bring proof of household income for 30 days, proof of county residency, name of school attending in the fall, grade the child will attend, proof of child’s age (birth certificate, medical card with birth date or shot records) and Social Security number of all members of the household.
Program on spices at Barlow library
The Barlow Library will host a “Spice” program by Joyce Hammett at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The program will include samples of spices, a history of the ancient spice trade and an explanation of spices and their health benefits. Sign-up is requested by calling 678-0103.
I-77 lane closures for bridge inspection
Lane closures are expected between noon and 7 p.m. Monday on I-77 northbound across the Williamstown-Marietta Ohio River Interstate Bridge due to a routine inspection. Delays are expected to be minimal.
on Civil War battle
In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and the Battle at Buffington Island, the Campus Martius Museum and the Washington County Public Library will host Lester Horwitz, author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book “The Longest Raid of the Civil War.” The program will take place at the Campus Martius Museum at 2 p.m. July 20. It is free and open to the public.
Belpre High alumni ice cream social
The Belpre High School Alumni Association will hold its annual ice cream social from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Howes Grove Park and the Belpre Senior Center. There will be cakes and pies, hand-scooped ice cream, beverages, hot dogs and chips along with live music and a tractor and antique car display. Money from the social will be used for scholarships for Belpre students.
