Merchants and Artist Walk a fun twist shopping local

The Merchant and Artist Walk, held the second Friday of the month in Historic downtown Marietta and Harmar Village, provides a fun twist to shopping local. But it’s not only a night about shopping; it’s also a night about community and getting to see your neighbors and friends. Local artists also get a great opportunity to gain exposure for their craft.

This month has many musicians placed around the participating blocks, starting at The Peoples Colony Theatre on Putnam Street, and all the way to Front for an enjoyable musical experience while strolling between shops.

“One nice standard at our Merchants & Artist Walk, are the artisans who have committed to their city and their craft by locating in the downtown area,” said Jean G. Farmer, executive director of ReSTORE Marietta. “Shops like AA Baldwin’s Jewelry by Design, Schafer Leather and John Rossi Art are a few examples, with many, many more whose creative works show support of the creative economy. From quilts to chocolates, to art galleries, framing galleries and more, there’s much to experience and enjoy.”

More spots are available for artists who want to participate. To participate, e-mail ReSTORE Marietta at for an electronic copy, or call (740) 885-8194 for more information.

The next two Merchants & Artists Walk are Aug. 9 and Nov. 8. For a complete list of this month’s participating merchants and artists, call (740) 885-8194.

Underground Reads Walking Tour July 27

The Friends of the Marietta library will be offering a free walking tour, “Underground Reads Walking Tour: Dig in to Local History Hunt” at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 27.

What clues to the past are hidden in the back alleys and brick passageways of downtown Marietta? Those ages 14 to 114 are invited to join local author Lynne Sturtevant on a search for evidence of fires, floods and public improvement projects gone horribly wrong. A few faded ads for forgotten businesses and products that no longer exist may even be encountered. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a camera. After the program, the most interesting shots can be posted to a special online photo album created especially for this event. This walking tour will start at the entrance to the Parking Partners lot on Second Street.

This program is ticketed and limited to 50. To reserve a spot, stop by the information desk or call 373-1057, ext. 208. Tickets will be available for pick up the week preceding the event.
