ZANESVILLE – There are going to be growing pains when a team loses more than half its roster.
Rosecrans suffered some of those first-hand on Saturday night, being held to less than 50 total yards in a 54-0 loss to visiting Belpre in the season opener at Rosecrans High School.
Quarterback Travis Johnston ran for 34 yards on 23 carries for the Bishops, who had 43 total yards and four first downs.
Rosecrans didn’t cross midfield until the fourth quarter right before the game was called due to lightning.
Belpre took advantage of its size and depth, reaching the end zone on its first three possessions of the game.
Manney Tullius scored the first of his three touchdowns with a 2-yard run to cap a 9-play, 65-yard drive, but the kick failed to make it 6-0.
After Rosecrans went 3-and-out, quarterback Tavian Miller found Dejon Bedgood for a 48-yard touchdown pass. Miller’s two-point run extended the lead to 14.
The Bishops notched a first down on the next possession, but had to punt it away to the Golden Eagles. They needed just three plays to cover 43 yards, including Tullius’ 5-yard touchdown run. Nathan Mason’s kick pushed the lead to 21-0 through one quarter.
Miller completed the first-half scoring with a 15-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Leftwich in the second quarter.
The Golden Eagles added four touchdowns in the second half.
Miller scored from two yards out, Matthew Colvin broke off a 39-yard scoring scamper, and Tullius added his third score on a 30-yard dash in the third quarter.
Jaden Lacaria ran in the game’s final score from 23 yards away in the fourth to cap the scoring.
Miller completed 4 of 9 passes for 108 yards with two touchdowns and ran five times for 46 yards, while Tullius surpassed the 100-yard mark with 107 yards on eight carries.
Belpre had seven first downs and ran the ball 23 times for 214 yards and six touchdowns.
Belpre (1-0) is scheduled to entertain Fort Frye (1-0) at Ralph Holder Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
