To Congress: Do what you were elected to do

Panic has struck the conservative base. A recent letter to the editor states that Obamacare is unconstitutional, regardless of how the current Supreme Court interprets it. Case made. It is, in fact, constitutional.

The Affordable Care Act, lovingly called Obamacare, is less than a month away from offering the new insurance exchanges to the American people in states where they are not currently in operation. These exchanges will provide health care to millions at lower premiums than previously expected.

A recent poll by Morning Consult Wednesday shows only 6 percent of the American people want The Affordable Care Act delayed or defunded and only 7 percent of all republicans want it defunded. The poll also shows that two-thirds of the people want it left alone, improved or expanded. It is incomprehensible that republicans in congress along with the tea baggers have made “defunding Obamacare their top priority and in doing so have circulated far too many untruths about it.

One of the most wide spread Obamacare myths is that it will increase insurance premiums. In fact, it actually stops insurance companies from raising premiums on sick people and those with preexisting conditions.

Another myth and one that the conservatives would like us to believe is the concept of “death panels.” Obamacare actually regulates insurance not health care. The republican base cannot give up on this one and I believe it is because they just don’t want to let go of something that sounds so repulsive. And they believe if they keep the death panel issue out there someone might just decide to believe it.

And the Obamacare myths get even more ridiculous regarding the “CHIP” implant. No one in their right mind believes that under the new health care law a chip will be implanted somewhere in our body. But, then again, it just sounds too good to those opposing Obamacare and they feel it is worth repeating time and again.

Oh, and here is one of the right wing favorites “we will not be permitted to keep our doctor.” Again, not true but it sounds pretty darned scary to those who are ill-informed.

Other right wing myths include Obamacare forces abortion and contraceptives, Obamacare rations health care, Obamacare is Socialist, Obamacare will allow your freedom to be jeopardized and on and on.

I am exhausted from listening to these people whine about defunding Obamacare and going so far as to use the issue as a threat to shut down the government. The House Republicans have voted 40 times to repeal Obamacare. Get over it. It is the law of the land and it’s here to stay. So, my message to the U. S. Congress is try doing things that the American people elected you to do like working on ways to provide jobs, helping the unemployed, feeding our children, educating our children, fixing our infrastructure, bringing science and technology to the forefront, and doing the things that make our country great. Is this too much to ask?
