Prep soccer: Miller named District Player of the Year

Fittingly, the team that won the 2013 Division II Southeast District boys soccer championship featured the district’s top player.

Warren High senior Alex Miller was named District Player of the Year after scoring 40 goals this season for the Warriors, who won their third district title in a row this fall.

Miller’s coach Andrew Johnson was named District Coach of the Year after guiding Warren to a 16-3-2 record on the pitch this season. Junior Aaron Mazurkiewicz joined Miller on the All-District first team, while fellow Warriors Nate Robinson and Wyatt Lynch were second team and Michael O’Callaghan and Seth Hall were honorable mention.

Also leaving their mark on the D2 boys list were the Marietta Tigers.

Marietta’s Brent Huck and Jacob Holdren each earned first team honors. Holdren was tops for the Tigers in assists and second on the team goals. Huck missed time with injury but returned midway through the season to help shore up Marietta’s defense.

The Tigers’ leading scorer was Max Suckel, who was named second team All-District. Suckel scored 23 goals this fall for Marietta. Marietta senior co-captain Brennan Uhrig also made the second team.

Keeper Eric Pierce and midfielder Skylar Miracle also represented MHS on the honorable mention list.

The Todd Morris-coached Tigers fell to Warren in the district final game, finishing the season 14-3-3.

In Division III, Belpre’s Devin Daniell was named first team while Ryan Epperly was second team and Cody Storer and Zach Pribble were honorable mention.

On the girls side, Marietta’s Katie Miller and Rebekah Haught were each named first team All-District in Division I. Miller and Haught were also named first and second team All-ECOL, respectively, for their performances this fall.

Embry Roberts was named to the second team, while Audrey May and Sami Koons were honorable mention picks.

The Lady Tigers were led by head coach Jeff Price, who was named District Coach of the Year.

In Division II, Raeli Barnes and Raelyn Gardner were Warren’s top two scorers this fall and were rewarded with first team All-District honors. Barnes, after posting 29 goals this season, was also named Southeastern Ohio Athletic League Player of the Year.

Senior Jordan Smrek was a second team selection while sophomore Emma Yabs was honorable mention for the Lady Warriors.

Ekrem Eksi coached Warren to a 13-3-1 record this fall.
