Sunday liquor sales issues pass

From staff reports

Voters had no problem approving Sunday liquor sales for two neighboring Harmar establishments, but a Sunday liquor issue in Dunham Township passed by a much slimmer margin.

In Marietta’s fourth ward, both the Harmar Tavern and Spagna’s restaurant will be allowed to serve liquor and wine on Sunday. Both businesses are owned by Kevin Whitby, who was celebrating the decision Tuesday night at the tavern.

“I’m really happy we had the support of the community,” he said.

The first issue, which allowed Whitby to apply for a wine and liquor license at Spagna’s, passed with 77 percent of 190 voters in favor of the measure. The second issue, which allowed for Sunday sales of liquor at both establishments, passed with around 75 percent of 191 voters in favor of the measure.

It also appears that Dunham Township residents passed a measure that will allow for Sunday liquor sales at Lawnsdale Carry Out and Bar at the intersection of Ohio 7 and Briggs Hill Road.

However, it is possible that provisional ballots would have an effect on the issue. With 100 voters in support of the Sunday sales and 98 against, the issue only passed by a two vote margin.
