Pioneers score another baseball victory

Snow’s on the ground and the mercury is hovering around freezing, but there’s great baseball-related news for Marietta College and the Marietta community.

The college is hosting the 2014 NCAA Division III Regional Tournament at Don Schaly Stadium May 14-18. Marietta had to compete to earn permission from the NCAA. Job well done, Marietta, which will host the regionals for the fourth time in the past five years and the 15th time overall.

The college competes well when it comes to college baseball. Marietta College has a history of excellence on the baseball diamond, first under the leadership of legendary coach Don Schaly and recently under Brian Brewer who is one of the most successful coaches in recent years. Marietta has earned a record six NCAA Division III national baseball titles, most recently in 2012.

In addition, Marietta’s facility along Pike Street is among the best in the nation thanks to support from the community and friends of Marietta College. Marietta is one of eight host sites. Regional winners advance to the Division III World Series May 23-27 at Grand Chute, Wis.

Of course, we hope Marietta participates in this year’s regional tournament. Baseball fans in the area turn out in big numbers to root on the Pioneers, especially when it come to tournament time.

There are the economic benefits to the area, too, with baseball fans eating in our restaurants and buying gas locally. So, in a big way Marietta is already a winner by hosting the tournament.

The rest will be decided on the field of play. Pioneer baseball fans will surely be watching and rooting.

Way to go Pioneers.
