Gregory Lee DeVol
Gregory Lee DeVol, 66, of Caldwell, passed away Saturday (Jan. 4, 2014) at his home.
Greg was born March 16, 1947, in Marietta, a son of late Howard J. and Janice M. Brown DeVol. He attended school in Dexter City, Ohio, and Williamstown and was a 1965 graduate of Caldwell High School. Greg went on to Salem College in Salem, W.Va., graduating in 1970.
Greg was a longtime employee of B & N Coal, retiring in 2013. Before beginning his employment with B & N, Greg served as teacher, coach and principal in Jewett-Scio schools; Dexter City School; and Caldwell High School, where he also served as Athletic Director.
Greg was a longtime coach and statistician for the Caldwell Redskins Football Team, known affectionately as “Coach Greg” to hundreds of players, and was a member of the Caldwell Football Hall of Fame. Besides the football program, Greg was a loyal supporter of all of the Caldwell E.V. School District’s extra -curricular and academic programs.
Off the football field, Greg enjoyed family gatherings at his home, and sharing his love of Nags Head, N.C. with many friends and family members over the years. In life Greg was a giver and this continued after his passing as he gave the gift of life through organ donation.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, James Howard Archer.
Surviving are two brothers, Mike (Connie) DeVol of Marietta and Jeff (Julia) DeVol of Macksburg and two sisters, Tonda (Gene) Brown of Woodsfield and Tina (Kenny) Archer of Sarahsville. He is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews, Jill (Christine) DeVol, Troy (Stacy) DeVol, Rob (Cindy) DeVol, Shelley (Jeff) Stottsberry, Shawn DeVol, Megan DeVol, Jamie (Kamille) Harless, Larry (Krishenda) Harless, Lori (Chris) Lynn, Amy (Tucker) Roberts, Steven (Liz) Brown, Jessica Archer, Katie Archer and Tommy Archer and 13 great-nieces and nephews. Coach Greg was never a stranger and leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Friends will be received Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2014) from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Chandler Funeral Home, 609 West St., Caldwell, Ohio, 43724. A funeral service will be held Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2014) at 11 a.m. in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Jim Garrett officiating. Burial will follow in Dudley Cemetery, south of Caldwell.
