Caldwell’s Furr to run at Wheeling Jesuit
CALDWELL – Jenna Furr has logged in a lot of miles for Caldwell cross country and track coach Dugan Hill over the past four years.
Furr has decided to extend her running career for at least another four years as she signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Wheeling Jesuit University Monday at Caldwell High School.
Furr plans to compete in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track for the Division II Cardinals and will major in biology.
“It felt right,” Furr said of her decision. “I felt at home. I liked the coach (Ricky Moore) and the members of their team and the athletes coming in.”
Furr also considered Ohio Wesleyan, West Virginia Wesleyan and Division I Marshall. In the end, Wheeling Jesuit’s Caldwell-like size and atmosphere fit Furr’s comfort zone.
“Solid decision,” Hill said.
“It’s awesome for the program. It shows that we’ve got kids who can go and compete at the next level. Whenever they’re offered a scholarship to run at that next level, the higher level, that’s a pretty cool thing for everybody involved.”
Furr made her presence felt early on in her prep career. As a sophomore, she qualified for state in cross country for the second time and in outdoor track for the first time. She has made it back to state in both sports every year since, earning All-Ohio honors in cross country and indoor track, and is now hoping to stand on the podium for the first time at the outdoor state meet this spring.
“I’ve definitely had an awesome coach that helped me get all those accomplishments,” Furr said. “This cross country season, at the state meet when I earned All-Ohio, was probably the best moment of my high school career.”
Furr owns Caldwell’s school record in the 3200 meter run, with her best recorded time being 11 minutes, 34.81 seconds. She has earned All-Eastern District and All-OVAC honors every year in both cross country and track.
Furr, the owner of a 3.8 cumulative grade-point average, is also a three-time Academic All-Ohioan. She is hoping her high school success continues into her college career.
“It would be really nice to be able to run at the national meet and maybe even become an All-American,” Furr said.
NOTES: Furr is the daughter of Chuck and Denise Furr. She has a younger sister, Lindsay, who also runs at Caldwell. … Some of Furr’s personal records are as follows: track, 800 meter run: 2:26; 1600 meter run: 5:25.89; 3200 meter run: 11:34.81; cross country, 5000 meter run: 19:07.21.
