Donald Clegg Dowler

Donald Clegg Dowler, 89, of Parkersburg, passed away peacefully, Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Marietta Center in Marietta.

He was born June 12, 1924, in Wood Co., a son to the late Cleve Dowler and Georgia Rogers.

Don lived on Blennerhassett Island in the old Neale house from the time he was a child until about 1945 when he and his wife moved to Parkersburg. He and his brothers farmed the land. He enjoyed telling stories about life on the island and all the hardships they had to endure as well as the good times they had while living there.

Don was also an avid nature lover. He loved everything about nature. He enjoyed watching the “critters” come up on the porch and eat corn and seed. He loved going out in the woods just to watch for deer during hunting season (he didnat want to shoot one).

Don also loved his family, he wasn’t much on going places, however if the kids wanted to go, he would take them wherever they wanted to; even if it meant spending the night somewhere else.

He was a Millwright for many years and was a member of the Lubeck Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Snow Dowler; daughter, Sue Mauser; grandchildren, Mike Westbrook and Tony Mauser; brothers, Herbert, Richard, Carm, Cliff, Earl, James and Blaine Dowler; sister, Gladys Coe; and sons-in-law, Clinton “Jr” Lester and Tim Farnsworth. He is survived by his son, Barry Dowler (Debbie) of Parkersburg; daughters, Sharon Lester of Parkersburg, Rennie Westbrook (Larry) of Parkersburg, and Teresa Carpenter (Rick) of Vienna; grandchildren, Kevin Lester, Lori Anthony, Missy Westbrook, Dawna Cunningham, Bobby Dowler, Joanna Cox, Ronnie Kimes and Tessa Hickman; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Avis Adams of Fleming, Ohio; along with many other extended family and friends.

Service will be 11 a.m., Monday, June 2, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Minister Dave Newberry officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Sunday, June 1, at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Dowler’s honor to the Marietta Hospice, 450 Pike St., Marietta 45750.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the Marietta Center, Marlene Harris, Rhonda Stone, Sharon Ball and Pam Enoch for their love and care of Don.
