Local woman celebrates her 100th birthday
Mabel Hutson, a resident of Emeritus at Marietta, celebrated her 100th birthday along with her family and many of her friends at the Vienna Community Center in Jackson Memorial Park on Memorial Day.
She was born May 25, 1914, in Webster County, W.Va., to Noah and Eva DeGarmo. She spent her teen years near Jane Lew, W.Va., along with her two brothers, Frank and Ralph. On Nov. 25, 1940, she married Mason Hutson of Salem, W.Va., and together they had four children: Frances, Larry, Everett and Lester. She has been a widow since 1971.
She is a retired school teacher who began her career in a one room school near Buckhannon, W.Va., in 1938. During the final 20 years of her career, she was employed by the Marietta City School system where she taught at the former Stanleyville Elementary School and Phillips Elementary School. Since her retirement in 1980, she has been involved in several civic organizations and church activities.
