MOV’n Dragons orientation Saturday

This past winter seems to have set records all over the country, including the Mid-Ohio Valley. Now, the recent rains have set another record for the MOV’n Dragons. This will be our eighth season on the water. And though this is the longest we’ve had to wait, finally, we are now on the water!

I’m sure by now some of you are saying, “we have dragons in our water?” Well, if you haven’t heard of us, here’s a little history:

Dragon Boating originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. It was a celebration of the revered dragon, which people believed would ensure them bountiful crops and good health. It is now being prescribed as a physical regimen for breast cancer thrivers to overcome the side effects of surgery, and to provide emotional support and friendship.

Today, dragon boating is a worldwide sport with races and festivals. Each boat is powered by 20 paddlers, sitting 2 abreast, with a steersperson in the back keeping the boat on course, and a drummer in the front keeping the strokes in unison. The MOV’n Dragons is a group of cancer survivors or (as we prefer to be called) thrivers, and supporters (both men and women) who get together during the warmer months for exercise and fellowship. Some of us practice to enter competitions, others just for recreation. Either way the team encourages healthy healing and lifestyles.

Recently, separate from paddling, the team established a “Thriver Fund” to encourage area cancer survivors to participate in activities that promote fitness and fun, and support the transformation from “Survivor to Thriver.” With the assistance of local gyms, fitness centers and businesses that offer different types of exercise classes, the MOV’n Dragons will pay for your first steps toward a healthier, active life. In its first year, 20 survivors took part in the program!

With our season just beginning, we will be offering a new member orientation on Saturday, June 21, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

This will be an opportunity for anyone curious or interested to find out more. No one is under any obligation to join. We just want folks to check it out, and see if they think they would enjoy trying it out. The Mentoring Committee is working on the best ways to work with new people, so that they have a rewarding experience. This will be the first year to try out the one-on-one approach, for more personalized attention to the beginner.
