Bantam League tourneys scheduled for July

The Marietta Bantam Baseball League is scheduled to hold youth tournaments coming up in mid-July.

The action kicks off July 11 when the eight-and-under and 12-and-under divisions play. A week later, July 18, the 10-and-under and 14-and-under divisions will be in action. Both tournaments will last three days.

Each division will compete in pool play to determine seeds for a single elimination tournament where winners will be crowned. The top four teams in each tournament will earn medals and trophies. All teams are guaranteed a minimum of four games.

As of Wednesday, the tournaments were on pace for a good turnout.

“It’s still a bit early, but so far the response has been good,” said Bantam League president Jim Brown.

The Bantam League recently finished up its regular season. Currently, teams are competing in their postseason tournaments, which conclude this weekend. Following that will be a league all-star game which will wrap up the season and lead into the July tournaments.

The Bantam League continues to go strong, providing young, local players an opportunity to get their baseball careers started.

Established in 1950, the Bantam League kicks off every year in April. The league has helped many players develop and improve their skills. Brown said he can recall many players that came through the Bantam League and ended up contributing for a local varsity squad.

Who knows? The next Marietta, Warren or Belpre star might just be digging his cleats into one of the fields at the Andy Elliott Baseball Complex adjacent to the Washington County Fairgrounds in July.
