We can all support Special Olympics
In a break between storms Wednesday, area law enforcement officers and Special Olympians carried the Ohio Special Olympics Torch through the streets of Marietta.
We have about 25 Olympians in Washington County who are set to compete in the Special Olympics, which kick off Saturday in Columbus.
These Olympians have trained all year in events from basketball to bowling and we wish them the best of luck as they compete.
Whether they win or lose, they should know that the residents of Washington County are proud of them.
An event like the Special Olympics is something we can all support. For those who have the time, think of traveling to the capital to watch some events and cheer on the participants.
For others, find out how you can support the athletes as they prepare throughout the year.
These games provide important opportunities for those who compete. Participating builds confidence and a positive self-image in the athletes, which carries over into other areas of their life. It may help them make strides in the classroom, workplace and in the community.
We’re glad our city hosted a leg of the torch run and that we have so many Special Olympians among us.
