National Society of Arts and Letters

The Ohio River Valley Chapter celebrated the 70th anniversary of the founding of the National Society of Arts and Letters by hosting its National Convention in Charleston, W. Va. Founded in 1944 in Chevy Chase, Md. by Francesca Nielsen and Mollie Nicholson the organization flourished through the United States by assisting and promoting the achievements of young artists as they build careers in their respective art forms.

The 2014 National Convention, chaired by Mary Ann Osborne of Parkersburg, was held at the Charleston Marriott Town Center. She was assisted by Sally Davis, Nora Corra, Ann Bailey and Carolyn Hollendonner of Parkersburg, by Becky Wright, Charles Pridgeon and Jeanne Tasse from Marietta and by many volunteers.

In addition to the meetings and workshops, there was an anniversary dinner at the Erma Byrd Gallery of the University of Charleston and a reception at the Governor’s Mansion. The National Competition in Woodwinds was held and 18 instrumentalists competed for $26,000.

Following the convention, an optional trip to the Greenbrier was planned. The 2015 National Meeting and Competition in Drama will be held in St. Louis, Mo.
