Pioneer golf outing a huge success

An eagle on the par-4 fourth hole proved to be the difference at the 29th annual Pioneer Club Golf Outing Friday afternoon at Lakeside Golf Club. Two teams tied at 15-under par on the 6,318-yard, par-70 course, while the third place team finished 13-under par.

On the strength of that eagle, the team of Mike McCreary, Doug Robinson, Jeff Schramm and Marietta head men’s basketball coach Jon VanderWal won the tie-breaker and were awarded first place. Also shooting a 55 and finishing second was the team of Nate Eschbaugh, Nathan Evans, Chris Hendricks and Ryan Thompson. Third place went to Brian Gasser, Matt Gasser, Rod Harris and Chris Wharff.

Thanks to the generous support of several local businesses, all proceeds from the annual event will go directly into the Pioneer Club fund. BSN Sports again served as the outing’s title sponsor. Thanks also go out to All-American sponsor Marietta Ignition and All-Region sponsors Concentric Technologies, Gillard Construction, Magnum Magnetics and Peoples Bank. In addition, numerous other local businesses served as hole sponsors and donated items to the annual raffle.

Prizes were awarded to the top three foursomes and various hole prizes. The featured raffle prize of the event was a complete set of Nike Covert golf clubs donated by BSN and IMS Inc. and valued at $1400. Ray Fanta ’79 was the lucky winner of the new set of clubs.

19 teams, featuring 76 golfers, participated in this year’s outing.

The Marietta College athletic department would like to thank everyone that participated and looks forward to another successful outing in 2015.
